Abstract. Organic nitrate esters are key products of terpene oxidation in the atmosphere. We report here the preparation and purification of nine nitrate esters derived from (+)-(3)-carene, limonene, α-pinene, β-pinene and perillic alcohol. The availability of these compounds will enable detailed investigations into the structure reactivity relationships of aerosol formation and processing and will allow individual investigations into aqueous phase reactions of organic nitrate esters.

Short summary
This report describes a simple, safe and effective method to prepare nitrate esters of terpenes (carene, limonene, perilic alcohol, beta-pinene and alpha-pinene) which are key oxidation products in the atmosphere. These compounds are implicated in the formation of secondary organic aerosols. A compilation of the relevant spectroscopic data has been presented. The availability of these compounds and their characterization data will enable further study of the structure-reactivity relationships.
